The day of love is within reach, or should we call it the day of panic? Singles are panicking that they’ll be sitting in alone because their friends will be on dates, men will be panicking about what to get their other half to avoid being in the dog house, and women will be panicking that they won’t get 50 red roses. But let’s face it, Valentine’s Day is just one, big marketing ploy for shops to earn that extra bit of money. Fret not, I’ve come up with a few activities to stop the panicking, no matter what your status may be.
Let’s work this like one of the Traffic Light parties student unions held when you were in uni. Green if you’re a single pringle, ready to mingle; amber if “it’s complicated”; red if you’re taken and just at this party to wing woman your single friend.
Being single on Valentines Day isn’t something to be sad about. Think about the money you’ll save. You can buy yourself a gift – “To me. You deserve this you big sexy. Love, me”
Grab your bestie and go out for dinner, just the two of you. This year, my bestie and I are heading to a “Ladies Night”, the evening before Valentines Day. Even though I have a boyfriend, I still want to share the love with my best friends and make sure they’re getting treats too! We’ll have dinner, drinks and watch Magic Mike; like the big creeps we are.
Dance until your heart’s content
All the single ladies, all the single ladies. Why don’t you head out with your green light buds in your life? Put your dancing shoes on and hit the town.
You’re seeing someone but you haven’t had the “what are we?” chat. Or, you’re just here for a good time.
Don’t splash the cash
Sit in together. Watch some movies, eat lots of snacks and talk. Talking with the person you have feelings for is so heart warming. I still get butterflies when Caolán and I stay up late talking about life…and we’ve been serious for years!
Go to a party
Just the two of you or join some friends, it’s a good way to get comfortable together or to make that final decision when you see them in that type of zone.
Have that conversation with a side of Dutch courage
Whether you sit in together or go out for a few drinks, if you want to know where you stand in this relationship/ friendship/ whatever the hell it is, have that dreaded conversation. It’s better to know whether you should throw those final few eggs in the basket or move on with your life.
This will be the easiest date day if you’re in a relationship. Although it’s seen as a marketing ploy, it reminds you to pay more attention to your other half.
Dinner in your favourite restaurant
book the table now! You’d be surprised at how quickly restaurants fill up. My favourite restaurant for date night is Coppi but last year it was impossible to get a table!
Save your pennies and just spend time together
I’m in the mood for this idea, this year. It’s nice to dedicate a whole evening to catching up and spending quality time with the one you love, and what better way to do that than a night in, cooking together and prosecco flowing!
I hope you can use some of these ideas to fill your day on February 14th! Have a good one, no matter what you do.
